A22a (formerly Walter Walter) is a multidisciplinary studio of architects, designers and researchers, founded in 2019 by Andrew Walter. We explore what it means to live in the built environment today with work spanning residential architecture, adaptive re-use commercial projects and urban scale master plans, addressing social, urban, ecological and functional issues. All of our projects are connected by a deep interest in the practical realities of designing for an environmentally and economically sustainable future. We use design processes to produce spaces, ideas and objects that are functional and crafted to unlock the potential of the changing world we live in.

Pillars

These following values shape our approach, output and relationship to the world around us, read more on each below –

Craft

+

We explore methods of preserving the essence of handmade craftsmanship amidst our evolving digital era. Seeking ways to redefine the significance of craft in modern-day production. We delve into craft across various design and artistic disciplines and explore how it can be seamlessly integrated into our design process and all studio outcomes.

Connection

+

The connection to self, space and other people runs through every aspect of the studio. The connection of our thoughts, acts and deeds to other people and our world guides each line we draw and the materials we connect, from our research, right through to a clients experience of a designed space, are centred around human experience.

Progress

+

The principles of environmental psychology are ever evolving. Complex questions need to be asked to progress, stay informed and delve into the inner workings of human perception, cognition, and behavior. Being progressive means we are constantly challenging ourselves and it guides our strong desire to learn how to do things better.

Curiosity

+

The curious nature of our studio is evident in the value we place in craft, tradition, technology and materiality, and by the ongoing research and experimentation within these realms. The same interrogative approach applies to the environment, with a focus on how humans affect, and are affected by, natural and urban environments.

Honesty

+

Forming a background for human memories stems from a place of honesty. At times there may be diversions and distractions, but at its core we value the true ways in which people use, interact and form memories within the spaces and work we create.

Community

+

We are more than just an architecture studio and we genuinely aspire to make a lasting impact through our environmentally, community-minded and socially driven approach. Our architectural / design thinking is the toolkit which we use to solve complex social, cultural and even political issues. Our research-based approach investigates the ecological, historical, political and social forces shaping the world around us today in order to find a better tomorrow for everyone.
